Rishiri Rebun Sarobetsu National Park is the northernmost national park in Japan, boasting a varied landscape of mountains, flower fields, sea cliffs, marshlands, and coastal dunes. Mount Rishiri, also called Rishiri Fuji, is a beautiful conide-shaped mountain and the symbol of the park. On Rebun Island, flower fields of alpine flora, including rare plants such as the lebun atsumorisou, can be seen in the lowlands. On the Nukumi and Wakisakiuchi coasts, lakes and marshes are scattered between several rows of sand dunes that have developed in a band-like pattern, creating an unusual landscape together with dune forests of Quercus crispula and Abies sachalinensis. The Sarobetsu Wilderness is one of the largest high moorlands in Japan spread over peat, and is also an important staging ground for migratory wild birds such as geese and ducks.
