map
Shiretoko National Park is characterized by its rugged and magnificent landscape formed by volcanic activity and drift ice, and by its rich wildlife. In particular, the park is home to many large mammals such as brown bears and killer whales, as well as large birds of prey that are threatened with extinction. In July 2005, Shiretoko was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in recognition of the diversity of life in the area, as well as the connections between the sea, rivers, and forest ecosystems.
