national parks
map
Fuji is not only the highest mountain in the Japanese archipelago, but also a famous mountain deeply rooted in the hearts of the Japanese people and known throughout the world as a symbol of Japan. Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park is a national park representing the volcanic country of Japan, with various volcanic landforms and hot springs formed by stratovolcanoes, calderas, and volcanic islands, as well as varied coastlines and islands. Fuji, the Hakone-Izu National Park is divided into four areas: the Mt. Fuji area, which includes Mt. Fuji and its surrounding lakes, marshes, and plateaus; the Hakone area, which has long been famous as a hot spring resort and a post town on the Tokaido Highway; the Izu Peninsula area, with its attractive Mount Amagi, varied coastline, and hot springs; and the Izu Islands area, which includes the seven Izu islands of Oshima and Miyakejima, which remain active volcanoes to this day. The Izu Islands region consists of the seven Izu islands, including Oshima and Miyakejima, which are still volcanically active. Fuji can be seen from all parts of the park, and because of its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area, it is the most visited national park in Japan.
