Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park is the southernmost national park in Japan and is characterized by its unique subtropical natural landscape, which consists of a rich and vibrant natural environment with subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests in near pristine condition, the largest mangrove forest in Japan, and coral reefs, and a human landscape where traditions nurtured in this natural environment are alive. Another major feature is the habitat and growth of many rare plants and animals unique to Yaeyama, such as the Iriomote wildcat and the Sakishima kanana snake, which have evolved uniquely through repeated separation and continuity with the continent. In Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, marine leisure activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, as well as land-based leisure activities such as trekking, animal watching, and driving, are actively conducted in this subtropical wilderness, providing park visitors with opportunities to interact with nature in a high quality way. The Iriomote Ishigaki National Park also provides visitors with opportunities to interact with nature. In addition, the area of Iriomote Ishigaki National Park was recognized as the first starry sky protected area in Japan, and visitors can enjoy the wonderful starry sky.
