Unzen-Amakusa National Park

national parks
map
This park was established in 1934 as one of the first national parks in Japan (Unzen National Park), and the Amakusa area was added in 1956 (Unzen-Amakusa National Park). The park is characterized by a great view of land and water, with the volcanic landscape of hot-spring Mt. The Unzen area is a mountainous region on the Shimabara Peninsula centering on Mt. Unzen, which consists of more than 20 mountains, and offers a variety of panoramic views set against the sea on three sides. Visitors can experience volcanic activity everywhere, including the hot springs of Jigoku, from which the mountain takes its name. The Amakusa area is an archipelago that includes 120 islands of various sizes. The coastline is rich in variety, with bends unique to submerged coasts, land-locked islands, and sea cliffs, and corals can be seen in the sea. Both areas have a rich history of Christianity, known for the "Shimabara-Amakusa Putsch," as well as the early arrival of foreign cultures, and are home to many historical sites. In recent years, the Shimabara Peninsula Geopark, with the national park area as its core, has been recognized as a park where visitors can learn about and enjoy the origins and blessings of the land in both regions.
