Yakushima and Kuchinoerabu Islands in Yakushima National Park are both located in the rich waters of the Kuroshio Current, and although they are only 12 km apart, they have completely different formation processes and natural landscapes. Yakushima has a steep terrain with Kyushu's highest mountains and a unique natural landscape with natural forests of giant cedar trees and other giant trees over 1,000 years old, and its "natural beauty" is recognized as an outstanding universal value of the World Heritage Site. On the other hand, Kuchino-erabu Island is the largest volcanic island in the Satsunan Islands, where volcanic activity continues to this day. The eastern part of the island is covered with volcanic landscapes, and the coastal area still retains natural beaches such as coastal cliffs and sea caves carved by rough seas. Although it is a volcanic island, it is covered with vegetation, and animals that are different from those on Yakushima, such as the Erabu flying fox, can also be seen.
