San'in Kaigan National Park is a 75-km coastal area extending from Kyotango City in Kyoto Prefecture in the east to Tottori City in Tottori Prefecture in the west. It is a rias coast (submerged coast) where the mountains meet the sea directly, and is characterized by the remarkable development of sea cliffs, sea caves, and reefs, and by the richly varied coastal landscape that is integrated with the sea area. On the other hand, open dunes such as the Tottori Sand Dunes, formed by sea erosion and sand carried from the mouths of rivers, are also a distinctive feature of this national park. The park is also called a "museum of coastal landforms" because of the variety of rock formations that can be seen throughout the park. In 2010, the San'in Kaigan Geopark, which is centered on San'in Kaigan National Park, was approved as a member of the World Geoparks Network, and the importance of the San'in Coast has been recognized worldwide.
